Domination was the name of the game this weekend for Ryan Blaney as he was the class of the
field in Sunday’s CRA Southern Six Pack WearCrete 150 at the famed Hickory Motor Speedway
(NC). The High Point, North Carolina hot shoe led flag to flag with a stout field of Super Late Model
drivers in his rearview mirror to grab his second win of the 2010 season.
“It feels really good to win,” said Blaney. “It takes away the pressure of not having won a race in
two months and it makes the whole team more relaxed. We’re going to do our best to keep this
relaxed feeling going.”
The Hickory track has been coined, “The birthplace of NASCAR stars,” and there was no lack of
competition for Blaney in the 150-lap event. Blaney held off two-time Snowball Derby Champion
Augie Grill for the majority of the race as well as Super Late Model veteran Jeff Fultz in the closing
laps.
“There are a lot of really strong cars running this series,” explained Blaney. “We didn’t just luck into this one, we had such a good car that I could really save my tires for the end. Luckily, it didn’t seem like the #112 [Grill] or the #67 [Fultz] could really hang on the way we could with the way the track was. My car was really good today and I am glad I had the privilege of racing with such clean guys. This track can be slick and people can get into each other and we were lucky to have such a clean day.”
Blaney and his #10 machine were able to pull away from the field to a comfortable lead on almost every restart and eventually cruised to the checkered flag after a late-race restart.
“I just have to thank my dad and all my guys for working so hard on my car this week,” said Blaney. “I couldn’t have done it without them. I really don’t think I could ask for a better racecar, the thing was really awesome today and it’s a lot of fun when you have racecar that good.”
With two wins now under his belt as we approach the summer racing season, Ryan Blaney knows they’ve got a solid foundation for a successful remainder of the year.
“It’s only May and we have a lot of racing left to do,” commented Blaney. “But I think we can finish strong and run well where ever we race. We’ve got two wins in two different series and that makes us confident about what we can do later in the year.”
The next stop on Ryan Blaney’s schedule will be Concord Speedway for the PASS South Old Glory 150 on Saturday May 29th.
